Once a small fishing settlement, Biarritz became one of Europe’s most fashionable seaside resorts during the 19th century, attracting royalty, aristocrats and wealthy travellers from across the continent.
Today, that elegant heritage remains visible throughout the city. Magnificent villas and grand hotels overlook the Atlantic, while stylish boutiques, restaurants and cafés fill the streets around the centre.
Start at the Grande Plage, Biarritz’s famous central beach, before following the coastline towards the Rocher de la Vierge. Reached by a footbridge extending over the sea, this rocky viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas across the coastline.
Another highlight is the picturesque Port des Pêcheurs, where small fishermen’s houses provide a reminder of Biarritz’s maritime past.
Biarritz is also considered one of Europe’s great surfing destinations. Head towards the Côte des Basques to watch surfers riding Atlantic waves beneath dramatic cliffs.
