The Miroir d'Eau Bordeaux : The Famous Water Mirror
Standing opposite the elegant Place de la Bourse, the Miroir d’Eau has become one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable landmarks. Covering over 3,400 square metres, it is the largest reflecting pool in the world and one of the city’s most photographed attractions. A Modern Landmark with Historic Surroundings
Although the surrounding architecture dates back to the eighteenth century, the Miroir d’Eau is surprisingly modern. It was inaugurated in 2006 as part of a major redevelopment of Bordeaux’s riverfront. Landscape artist Michel Corajoud designed the space to reconnect the city with the Garonne River while creating a welcoming public square where people could gather, relax and play.
Situated directly across from the magnificent Place de la Bourse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the reflecting pool complements one of France’s finest examples of classical architecture. Its minimalist design allows the historic buildings to take centre stage, producing breathtaking reflections that change with the light throughout the day.
How the Water Mirror Works
The attraction alternates between two simple but captivating effects. A thin layer of water, only a few centimetres deep, spreads evenly across the granite surface to create a flawless mirror reflecting the surrounding buildings and sky. Every few minutes, the water drains away and a fine mist rises through hidden jets beneath the surface, transforming the square into a dreamlike landscape.
This repeating cycle attracts visitors of all ages. Children enjoy running through the shallow water, while photographers wait patiently for the perfect reflection or dramatic mist-filled scene. Because the water is so shallow, it remains both safe and visually striking.

The Miroir d’Eau has become an essential stop for anyone visiting Bordeaux. During sunrise and sunset, the reflections are particularly spectacular as warm golden light illuminates the limestone buildings of Place de la Bourse. Best Time to Visit
Early morning provides the calmest conditions for photography, with fewer visitors and softer light creating near-perfect reflections. Sunset is equally rewarding, although it tends to be much busier.
Summer is especially lively, with families cooling off in the shallow water during hot afternoons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds while still providing excellent opportunities for photography.
